Crisp air, light jackets, cozy socks, and warm beverages…fall is an amazing time in NYC. On the weekends, we usually go for walks through Central Park to view the foliage. Green just a few weeks ago, the leaves have transitioned to vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow. Our usual routine is to pick up coffee on our walk to the park. This time, I decided to make mulled cider–fresh apple cider simmered with citrus and whole spices like cinnamon and cloves. I packed the cider in a thermos and off we went. During our walk, the cider kept us warm and when we came home, we reheated the leftovers and spiked it with rum. YUM!!
The how to…
Makes 1/2 gallon of mulled cider
1/2 gallon pure apple cider
peel of 1 orange
1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
3 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
- Simmer. Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, the reduce heat and simmer on low for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and ladle into mugs. Serve warm.
*Spiked version: Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, the reduce heat and simmer on low for 15 minutes. Add desired amount of rum and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and ladle into mugs.
