Get into the holiday spirit with homemade salt dough ornaments. This craft project requires three pantry ingredients (flour, salt, and ground cinnamon) and yields 22 cinnamon scented gingerbread type ornaments (or gift tags!) for less than $4. Although you can’t eat them, these rustic holiday decorations will fill your home with the sweet smell of christmas.
The how to…
- Mix. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a bowl, combine flour, salt, & cinnamon and mix well. Gradually add water and mix until dough comes together.
- Knead. Transfer dough onto a floured surface and knead until soft and pliable. Roll out dough until 1/8 inch thick. Use cookie cutters to stamp out desired shapes and dust off excess flour. Place shapes on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
- Bake. Using the end of a chopstick, make a hole in the top of the ornament. Bake for 1 hour, until hard.
*Swap ground cinnamon for other holiday spices like ground nutmeg, cloves, or allspice.
